Buying & Selling a Car in Northern Cyprus
Can I buy a car that's missing its registration document (ruhsat / koçan)?
Don't. Transfer in TRNC requires a current registration document (ruhsat, locally also called koçan) and a clean fines record. A seller may say it's "lost, I'll reissue it", but more often there's an underlying transfer issue — the seller may not be the real owner, the car may be mortgaged or held as collateral, or fines may have piled up. Never pay anything before you've seen the registration in person.
How does the transfer work? What's the MAKD process?
Transfers happen at the MAKD (Motorlu Araçlar Kayıt Dairesi — Vehicle Registration Office). Buyer and seller go together with ID and the vehicle registration document. The car must have no outstanding traffic fines or fees; the seller is expected to clear these first. If paperwork is in order the transfer completes the same day, and the registration is reissued in the new owner's name.
Can I import a car from Türkiye?
Yes, but customs and tax obligations apply — and the vehicle age limit is critical: TRNC generally allows permanent import of cars under 5 years old (limits can vary by category), older cars may be refused. Customs duty is calculated on engine displacement, emissions and purchase price; port and registration fees are charged separately. Cars brought in for personal use can be driven temporarily but cannot be sold or transferred. Before you start, talk to a customs agent or get current limits directly from MAKD.
Can I buy a UK (right-hand drive) car? What are the risks?
TRNC has left-side traffic like the UK and Japan, and right-hand drive cars are fully legal — there are plenty of UK and Japanese imports on the market. Three things to weigh: taking the car to Türkiye or the EU is awkward (most of those countries drive on the right), parts availability varies by brand within the island, and resale is slightly harder than for a left-hand drive. Prices usually reflect this — factor it in when deciding.
Is insurance mandatory? Do I need comprehensive cover?
Compulsory third-party liability (mali mesuliyet) is required by law before the car goes on the road. Comprehensive cover (kasko) is optional but strongly recommended for newer or higher-value cars. Premiums are generally lower than in Türkiye, but coverage and no-claims discounts vary between insurers — read the policy before signing.
What should I check before buying a car?
Start with the registration document — confirm the car is actually registered to the seller and free of debts. Then check the odometer, service history and maintenance records. View the car in daylight on a dry day, start the engine cold, and on the test drive try the brakes, gear changes and steering play. If you're unsure, independent inspection services in Lefkoşa, Girne and Mağusa will check the car for a fee — a small investment that prevents costly surprises.
How does haggling work here?
Asking prices are usually open to negotiation, especially on private listings, and even more so on "Acil Satılık" (urgent sale) ones. Open negotiations with specific issues you've noticed (scratched wheels, expired insurance, body dent) and use real comparisons from other KKTCar listings. Polite but firm, and be willing to walk away. Lowball offers tend to end the conversation early.
How do I sell my car quickly?
Three things matter: realistic price, good photos, honest description. Browse comparable cars on KKTCar and price just below average. Take 8–10 exterior and interior photos, ideally in daylight with the car clean. In the description, always state mileage, service history, accident history, insurance expiry and whether there are any outstanding traffic fines — answering the buyer's first questions in writing keeps your listing on the shortlist. If you need a fast sale, use the 'Acil Satılık' tag and a meaningful price reduction.
